Permanent Outdoor Lighting vs. Traditional Landscape Lighting: A Comparison

July 14, 2026

If you've been researching outdoor lighting, you've probably come across "permanent outdoor lighting" — the color-changing LED track systems mounted along a roofline, controlled from a phone app. It's a real product category, and it's worth understanding before you decide what's right for your home. Here's the straight version, including where we land on it.

What Permanent Lighting Is...

Permanent lighting is a track of small LED bulbs installed along your gutters or roofline, color-matched to blend in during the day. From an app, you can switch the whole house to red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, or your team's colors on game day — no ladder, no seasonal setup.

It's a real convenience for holiday lighting, and for homes with tall or steep rooflines where hanging string lights every December is a hassle or a genuine safety risk.

What We Install: Traditional Landscape Lighting

We install traditional, in-ground landscape lighting — individual low-voltage fixtures placed strategically around your property, using Alliance Outdoor Lighting, solid brass, professional-grade fixtures. Spotlights on mature trees, path lights along the walkway, well lights tucked into the beds near your foundation.

Instead of a continuous line of light at the roofline, this creates layers — depth and shadow that highlight the texture of your brickwork, the height of your trees, and the safety of your walkways at night. It's a warm, steady glow rather than a color show.

Why We Recommend Traditional Lighting for West Omaha Homes

We don't install permanent roofline track systems — and honestly, for the kind of properties we work on in West Omaha, Elkhorn, and the surrounding area, we don't think it's the right call for most homeowners anyway. Here's why:

  • It's built for the house, not just the holidays. Traditional lighting is designed to make your landscaping and architecture look intentional every night of the year — not just when it's set to a holiday color.
  • It's the standard for high-end properties. Walk any upscale neighborhood at night and the homes that look like a resort, not a light show, are almost always running ground-level fixtures, not roofline track.
  • It grows with your landscaping. As trees fill in and beds mature, in-ground fixtures can be repositioned. A roofline track is fixed in place.
  • Nebraska weather is hard on anything mounted to the house. Solid brass, in-ground fixtures are built to take the ice and heat without the added stress of gutter-mounted hardware.

If what you want is a subtle, upscale glow that makes your home look its best year-round — not just during the holidays — traditional landscape lighting is what we'd put in the ground ourselves.

Not Sure What's Right for Your Property?

Every home is different — roofline, existing landscaping, and how you actually want to use your outdoor space at night all factor in. We'll walk your property with you and tell you straight what we'd recommend.
